Scope and Content Note From the Sub-Series: Ivy Day began in 1878, as a serious event at which the junior class honored the outgoing senior class with the placing of a plaque above an ivy plant on a campus building. The event grew into something of a party as the years went on, leading to its cancellation in the early 1970s after some campus pranks got out of hand. This series contains correspondence and memoranda, inauguration materials, speeches, and other files pertaining to the administration of Bates College. The files of President Reynolds' inauguration include event programs and descriptions, and congratulatory materials from the presidents and administrators of other colleges and universities.
