Scope and Content Note
This is a large collection which includes news releases, correspondence, subject files, and other materials relevant to the functions of the Office of Communications and Media Relations. The publications of the office, including the Bates College Bulletin and the alumni magazine are herein contained. A substantial portion of this collection is made up of subject files kept by CMR staff. Another significant part of this collection is a chronological run of Bates News Releases. Smaller series relate to presidents of the College, commencement, funds and grants, and trustees.

The collection is the physical property of Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. Bates College holds literary rights only for material created by College personnel working on official behalf of the College, or for material which was given to the College with such rights specifically assigned. For all other material, literary rights, including copyright, belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns. Researchers are responsible for obtaining permission from rights holders for publication or other purposes that exceed fair use.
Historical Note
Records of public relations office of College, including news releases and accompanying materials such as press clippings, administrative records, calendars made available to members of College community and general public, and booklets issued by office.
The College News Bureau was established in 1948 to provide a systematic conduit of information on College events and activities of students, faculty and staff, to arrange contacts between College community members and media outlets, and to provide advice on media relations. The News Bureau became the Office of College Relations in 1995.
