Historical Note

The Bates Bobcat Jazz Band was formed by Bates students in the 1930s as an alternative outlet for performing music. Although not at first an officially sponsored student organization, the band grew in popularity such that it played at formal college events, such as the regular pop concert and dances held in Chase Hall. The Bobcats also played in Lewiston and across Maine and New England during its duration. With the departure of members due to graduation and enlistment in the armed services, the band was discontinued, and did not restart after the war's end.
