Governor Edmund S. Muskie with other governors, at governors’ conventions and campaigning for other Democrats outside of the state of Maine. Following his dark horse victory in 1954, Muskie became somewhat of a national Democratic Party celebrity, and as such was invited to campaign for other candidates, particularly during the time between Maine’s election in September, and most states’ elections in November.
