Historical Note
Classes in Greek, Latin, and classical history and literature were taught at Bates from the earliest curricula. A Greek and Latin Department was created in 1894, remaining so until split into its constituent studies in the 1920s. The program was renamed Classical Languages and Literature in the 1940s. Study in Greek was dropped in 1956, and the department itself was disbanded in the 1970s (with classes in ancient and classical civilization being taught in the Cultural Studies Department). The department as it exists today was reformed in 1991.
