Biographical or Historical Note

The department of African-American Studies was formed in 1993, preceding the 1993-1994 schoolyear, as an interdisciplinary program. Accordingly, it was comprised of courses in history, politics, english, anthropology, and rhetoric. As a point of interest, Bates was one of the last NESCAC schools to introduce an African-American Studies program.
