Historical Note

Classes in Sociology have been offered at Bates, dating back to 1891, through a variety of departmental incarnations. The program was expanded by several classes for the 1896-1897 academic year, under the heading "Economics and Sociology." The two programs of study would be split and reunited several times over the following decades, often under the heading "Social Sciences." Then, from 1942 until 1971, sociology classes were incorporated into their own department. This changed again, however, and between 1971 and 1994 sociology and anthropology were grouped together under the "Sociology and Anthropology Department". Preceding the 1994-1995 school-year, Sociology became consolidated as its own department again.
