Historical Note

The earliest foreign languages department at Bates was formed in 1894, as the Modern Languages department, and taught German and French. Spanish and Italian were introduced after the turn of the century. Language instruction at Bates since that time has come under many headings and department names, often with languages comprising their own department, and just as often existing as a combined unit.
