Historical Note

The first course in politics at Bates was a class titled International Law in 1863. A course in Political Economy was added shortly thereafter. In 1897, the Department of History and Political Science was created. Political Science became a separate department in 1901, becoming the Government department from 1913 until 1980, when it reverted to Political Science. The current name was adopted in 2006.
