Historical Note

Physical education coursework began to be required of Bates students by 1890, but a program of classwork proper was not formed until 1915, as courses in "Hygiene and Physical Education for Men." Courses for women were gradually added, but women and men did not take the same classes. Men's and women's physical education merged as a single department in the early 1970s.
