Historical Note
Algebra classes began to be offered in 1863 under Professors Robinson and Smyth. Mathematics, as a department, was then formed by 1877 with Professor Rand as head of the department. Previously, Johnny Stanton has taught Mathematics classes at Bates, although this field was outside of his area of expertise.
