Historical Note

Courses in education were taught at Bates starting in the early twentieth century, as part of existing departments. English, Physics, and German were departments that gave classes in teaching in that field. In 1915, a program of courses was offered at Bates in order to gain a teaching certificate in Maine. In the 1960s, as part of a general reorganization of coursework, the Department of Psychology and Education was formed. Education became its own department in 1975.
