Historical Note

[Adapted from the Bates website.] Founded in 2002, the Harward Center for Community Partnerships builds on Bates College's legacy by placing civic engagement at the heart of the Bates education. The center supports educational activities - teaching, research, artistic creation, environmental stewardship and volunteer service - that enrich community life. Work is grounded in three core values: the civic responsibility of higher education; the academic value of such community engagement; and a commitment to partnerships in weaving together academic work and public work.

The Harward Center for Community Partnerships is comprised of four programmatic areas: the Service-Learning Program, the Community Volunteerism and Student Leadership Development Program, the Bates - Morse Mountain Conservation Area and Shortridge Coastal Center, and the Events Management office.
