The first Dean was Harry Rowe, who served in that capacity until 1958. In 1986, the name of the office was changed to the current designation, the Office of Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty.

Today the office oversees the Academic Departments and Programs, as well as: Athletics, the Museum of Art, the Math Workshop, the Registrar and Student Financial Services, and the Writing Workshop. The Dean is responsible for the College's academic programs and curricula; faculty appointments; review, promotion, and tenure procedures; and programs for faculty development, including funding for student-faculty research.
