Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a variety of administrative files pertaining to the work and function of the Dean of Faculty at Bates College. The records contain copies of the Faculty Handbook (formerly the Faculty Green Book), various publications and brochures, annual reports, committee records and administrative correspondence and memoranda.

Administrative records are generally closed for twenty years after date of creation. Files created for general distribution, such as publications, are open to researchers.
Use Restrictions
The collection is the physical property of Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. Bates College holds literary rights only for material created by College personnel working on official behalf of the College, or for material which was given to the College with such rights specifically assigned. For all other material, literary rights, including copyright, belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns. Researchers are responsible for obtaining permission from rights holders for publication or other purposes that exceed fair use.
Historical Note
The office of Dean of Faculty was created by President Phillips in August, 1946. The Dean oversaw and coordinated the educational activities of the faculty of the college. The first Dean was Harry Rowe, who served in that capacity until 1958. In 1986, the name of the office was changed to the current designation, the Office of Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty.
Today the office oversees the Academic Departments and Programs, as well as: Athletics, the Museum of Art, the Math Workshop, the Registrar and Student Financial Services, and the Writing Workshop. The Dean is responsible for the College's academic programs and curricula; faculty appointments; review, promotion, and tenure procedures; and programs for faculty development, including funding for student-faculty research.
