Many of these photographs were taken by photographers employed by the College News Bureau. The News Bureau was the predecessor of the Office of College Relations. Most of the approximately 8,000 photographs in this collection are bandamp;w prints.
In the summer of 2001 the records of the Office of College Relations was transferred to the Muskie Archives. With these, an estimated 10,000 4x5 negatives; 20,000 prints; contact sheets; slides; and other non-print media were transferred. These will be added to the Bates Photograph Collection.
