Historical Note
The Sabattus Lake Association was formed with the purpose of organizing property owners in order to address concerns regarding the pond. The association addressed issues of pollution and run off from local businesses and farms as well as addressing the neglected dam. Subsequently, the Sabattus Lake Dam Commission was formed to oversee the management of the sleeper dam after the formation of an intra-town agreement between the towns of Sabattus, Greene, and Wales. Issues of water quality, seasonal algae blooms, stocking of fish, invasive plant life, water levels, annual draw downs, bank erosion, dam splash boards, and fish grates were debated and negotiated between town selectmen, the lake associations, property owners, State agencies, and politicians over the subsequent years.
