Collection contains written assignments and exams for various subjects; debate notes and speeches as well as programs and resource material; rank cards; assorted receipts, tickets, invitations and other Bates ephemera; material concerning the Student Council and Politics Club and resource material for the Christian Association.

The collection is the physical property of Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. William DeWitt Metz graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Bates in 1937 with a degree in history. During his college years he participated in debate, served on the Student Council and was a member of the Politics Club. During his senior year he served as class president and as president of the Christian Association.
He earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and joined the University of Rhode Island history department, serving as chair from 1962-1968. He retired in 1982
