The collection is the physical property of Edmund S. Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library. Historical note
William DeWitt Metz graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Bates in 1937 with a degree in history. During his college years he participated in debate, served on the Student Council and was a member of the Politics Club. During his senior year he served as class president and as president of the Christian Association.
He earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and joined the University of Rhode Island history department, serving as chair from 1962-1968. He retired in 1982
