Historical Note

Catherine Gilman Little was born on Nov. 13, 1885 in West Newbury, Massachusetts to Edwin C. and Catherine G. (Goodwin) Little. She attended Bates College, graduating in 1908. She taught school in a number of locations, including New Milford, Connecticut, Unionville, Merrimac, Mass., and Salem, Mass. Along with her sister Sarah (Bates class of 1910, died 1963) and her brother Harland (Princeton graduate, died 1959), Catherine purchased and renovated the Gen. Moulton House in Hampton, New Hampshire, which was built in 1770. Catherine and her siblings filled the house with period antiques and upon Catherine's death in 1974, the house and its furnishings were donated to Bates College. Bates sold the house. Many of the antiques are still owned by the College.
