Historical Note

Grosvenor Robinson (1867-1953) came to Bates as instructor of Elocution in 1896. While at Bates he became involved with developing the Little Theater Movement in New England at Bates and assisting with the 4-A theater productions (named after English 4A, the class course number. His studies extended outside Bates during summer vacations through extensive travel. He toured various theaters, attended drama and theater workshops, traveling extensively throughout Europe and Russia. He retired from Bates in 1938. That same year, the Bates theater group "English 4A Players" was renamed as "The Robinson Players" in his honor.
