Scope and Content Note
This collection contains records of the Athletics Department at Bates College. The records include correspondence, brochures, programs, schedules, guidebooks, and reports. Included are also some of the "Saturday Night Letters" from football coach Dave Morey.
Many of these records pre-date the official formation of the Athletics Department, but are included here for ease of description and research. For a more complete picture of athletics at Bates, particularly the early decades, researchers should also consult the following collections: CA 05.04, Sports Information Office; CA 09.14, Physical Education Department; and CA 12.02, Student Organizations (Series 1a, Athletic Association).

Historical Note
The first intercollegiate athletic contest involving Bates College was a baseball game against Bowdoin in 1872. Football followed in 1875, although it did not become officially sanctioned by the College until 1889. Track and field, and numerous other sports followed into the twentieth century.
Women's athletics has a long history at Bates, but only at the intramural level until the creation of a varsity field hockey team in 1966. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the Women's Athletic Association organized athletic events for campus women, but discouraged outright competition.
