Historical Note

Modern dance classes were offered at Bates from shortly after 1945, and performances were commonly given in conjunction with music programs at the college. In 1965, Marcy Plavin was hired to teach modern dance at Bates, and shortly thereafter started the Modern Dance Company. The group's first public performance came in 1969. The Bates Modern Dance Company has continued to perform, teach, and give various demonstrations in the ensuing years, and remains a vibrant part of Bates campus life.
