With Muskie the front-runner, the early Democratic primaries in 1972 amounted to a "stop-Muskie" effort. By the time of the Wisconsin primary, Geroge McGovern, George Wallace and Hubert Humphrey had largely succeeded. Muskie finished a disappointing fourth.
