Scope and Content Note
The series contains a variety of handwritten and typewritten materials pertaining to Anthony's book Bates College and Its Background. The first written history of the college, the book was researched and written by Anthony at the request of then president of the college, Clifton D. Gray. Included is correspondence between Anthony and several men and women who's families were related to the College's past such as Charles A. Garcelon, son of Dr. Alonzo Garcelon and Lilian G. Bates and S. Frances Herschel, daughters of Benjamin Bates. Also contains correspondence between Anthony and several students from the early days of the college, including Francena Stanton White Morrell, George Ricker, and Sybil Chase Ballard, and correspondence pertaining to Lebanon Academy and the Maine Central Institute and their relationship to Bates College.
The series also contains an unrevised first draft, revisions, omitted chapters and appendices, galley proof, several photographs, newspaper clippings and a large body of research notes and material.
