Morocco (plus bits of Portugal) (final draft), 1974 May
Scope and Content Note
This series contains two versions of Berkelman's travel diary. The diary refers to trips taken between 1924 and 1974, and covers such locations as Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, the Near East, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Russia, and Yugoslavia. Berkelman recalls his travels with extraordinary detail, and portrays an intimate look at each country he visited, usually in the company of his wife Yvonne. Of particular note are Berkelman's travels to England and France in 1924 and 1925, where he notes the visible effects of World War I. Berkelman visited many locations upon more than one occasion, and his diary recalls changes that he observed between these trips.
The first version is an early undated draft. This version is mainly typescript, but includes some manuscript revisions. The second version is a final draft which Berkelman edited between April and May 1974. The front matter includes a complete list of all the trips he took, including information on his travel partners.
