Scope and Content Note

From the Series:

Published annual reports of the Superintendent of the Lewiston Public Schools along with accompanying material, such as reports of individual principals, financial reports, census data about number of school-aged children in Lewiston, and course of study. Reports dating from the nineteenth century include information the number of students in a variety of ethnic and racial categories from each ward, similar to information contained in the "Census data" series. Early reports by the high school principal include information about student scholarship and deportment, similar to the early transcripts available in the "Registrarial records" series. Reports from the 1870s discuss the department's implementation of a policy to provide all textbooks and supplies to students without cost. Lewiston was the first city in New England to implement this policy. The reports also contain detailed information about the department's public Kindergarten program, one of the earliest in the country.
