Edmund S. Muskie Papers, Series XIV: Clippings

Identifier: MC105.14

Series Overview

The series comprises clippings related to Muskie's political career, personal life, and death.

The majority of the series has been microfilmed and is available for use in Ladd library. This portion comprises clippings from state and local newspapers and some out-of-state publications that were collected by the staff of his Waterville, Maine, office. The "Special Clippings" segment includes articles on his 1954 and 1956 gubernatorial campaigns, and his first two years in the U.S. Senate. The "Senator Muskie's Clippings" and "General" segments cover a wide range of subjects of interest to Muskie and his staff, such as Muskie's legislative and political activities, his public appearances, federal grants to local projects, and news items on such topics as employment and local economic conditions. The remaining segments deal with specific topics, such as the Maine legislature, Muskie's 1970 Senate reelection campaign, a possible 1976 challenge against Muskie by Rep. William S. Cohen.

The remainder of the series, approximately one quarter of the total clippings, has not been microfilmed, and can be used in the archives reading room. This portion comprises newsclippings about Muskie's entire political career, including his tenure as U.S. Secretary of State, as well as his death. Many of these clippings have been gathered together from numerous previous locations within the collection, while others came to the archives from the Jane G. Muskie estate and individual donors.

Although most of this series has been reformatted for preservation purposes (microfilmed and/or photocopied), a small number of original full newspaper pages and magazines have been retained for display and other purposes.
