Scope and Content Note
Contains a variety of press releases, newspaper clippings, and articles concerning awards and tributes to Rachel Carson. Included are the texts of Carson's acceptance speeches for the AAUW Achievement Award (June 1956); award presented by the National Council of Women (November 1956), the Schweitzer Medal (January 1963), the Audubon Medal (December 1963), and the Cullum Medal (January 1963). Also includes a copy of Carson's paper presented before AAAS in December 1953; text of Audubon lecture; text of lecture given in Wiscasset (for which Carson used slides by Stanley Freeman Sr.); text and recording of a speech given before the Women's National Press Club in December 1962; and Carson's statement made before a Congressional subcommittee in June 1963.
Materials relating to memorials and tributes after Carson's death include the Rachel Carson Committee (Marie Rodell); the Rachel Carson Trust; the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge and others.
This subseries also includes transcripts of the CBS Report "The Silent Spring of Rachel Carson" (April 1963); CBS Report "The Great Farm Vote of '63: the Verdict on the Silent Spring of Rachel Carson (May 1963); ABC-TV "The Sense of Wonder" (June 1968) and revised transcript of "The Sense of Wonder" (September 1968); and a reel-to-reel tape of a National Public Radio program labeled "Dorothy Rand Presentation (undated).
